Revd Julia Boothby introduces herself and her family

jbAs the newly appointed team vicar for North Mymms in the Bishop’s Hatfield Team I am glad to have this opportunity to introduce myself and my family to you. My name is Julia and I was brought up in a little village outside Newcastle where my family still live. I am then, a
Geordie, but my accent, as you will find out, has changed with living in the south for many years!

I studied theology at St. Andrews University where I met my husband David. We were married after my graduation and moved to Hertfordshire, to Aldenham School near Radlett, where David was teaching mathematics. Aldenham has played a very large part in our lives and after some years David and I became boarding house parents in one of the houses there. Living with sixty teenagers, boys and girls, was very hard work but we enjoyed the challenge (most of the time!) and the privilege of helping the young people in our charge.

David has continued to teach at Aldenham and in school holidays becomes a stamp dealer! He will continue to teach there once we have moved but is very much looking forward to the move and being involved in parish life.

Our three sons have also gone to Aldenham for their schooling. John, now 22 years old, went on to study Philosophy at St. Andrew’s University and having graduated is teaching Religious Education, Philosophy and English at Canford School in Dorset. He is also assisting the school chaplain in pastoral care and if he finds any spare time plays jazz piano!

James (21 years old) is in his second year at Edinburgh University studying Religious Studies and Politics. He is also a guitarist and golfer. Ben (17 years old) is in his last year at school and hoping to go on to study philosophy at university. He is a very keen sportsman, with cricket being his major sport and in his spare time plays the drums.

My call to ministry came following several years as a Reader and I spent two years on the St. Albans and Oxford Ministerial training course and was ordained in 2004. I spent a very happy curacy in the Welwyn Team ministry and since then have worked as team vicar and missioner in the Ouzel Valley Team (Leighton Buzzard).

I am very much looking forward to serving as your vicar and in the wider team context. St. Mary’s is a very beautiful and obviously well loved and cared for church and I count myself very privileged to have this opportunity to serve it and you. I look forward to my licensing with anticipation and to getting to know you in the days that lie ahead. As I write this the New Year is less than a week old so may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year and pray that together this year we may walk where God leads us together in His love.
